Think Your Credit Doesn't Matter To Your New Boss?

When you are being considered as a candidate for a new position within a company, you probably spend adequate time ensuring your resume is perfect, your interview was smooth, and your experience is relevant. What you may have overlooked in the job hunting process though can actually cost you an offer for employment.

More often companies are using outside resources to help them select the best candidates for open positions. Included in these resources is the ability to run a credit check on potential job candidates in the interest of dismissing potential bad matches. Credit checks are used increasingly often by employers who are looking for stable, reliable people. If your credit background is saying otherwise, you may not be selected for this job or others in the future.

Repair Credit Consistently

Before applying for a new job it is wise to check your own credit and see what your perspective employer will see if they run a credit check. They are required to get your pre-authorization before running a check on you so it should not come as a surprise. Order your credit reports from the three major credit reporting agencies TransUnion, Experian, and Equifax. Consumers are entitled to one free credit report each year and at any time for a period of 60 days after being denied credit. Credit scores on the other hand do require a fee to be paid for access to score information. Consumers should check their credit scores regularly to ensure they are in good standing.

Financial Jobs on the Line

If you plan to apply for a position at a financial services industry or take a position that deals with finances, you can almost be assured you will have a credit check performed on your history. Employers are looking for a profile of responsible candidates and if your own money handling skills are poor, there is a distinct possibility in similar failings at a financial-based job. Government agencies are also guaranteed to run credit checks on its potential employees.

Even if your job is outside the world of finance, a bad credit history can limit your work opportunities, now and in the future. It is important for you to get your money matters back on track and repair your credit profile. Boosting your credit score can be done immediately by paying bills on time, not overextending credit, and paying off as many debts as reasonably possible with your income and other financial responsibilities.

Credit repair does not happen overnight and there is no third-party business that can make that happen despite the rampant claims of some companies. It is up to you, the consumer, to keep your financial matters in focus and ensure you are doing all you can to keep your credit in a positive light.

Jobs Necessary

If you are unable to get a job because of your poor credit history, you need to face the facts that your situation will only get worse. Without the income necessary to make ends meet, you lack of employment and income will potentially create a deeper hole of debt and bad credit.

Work on repairing your credit whether or not you are in the market for a new job. By being prepared in advance, it will be less complicated to secure new work should you be terminated, laid off, or downsized from your current company in the near future. The job market today is a scary place and it is critical for all consumers to keep up with their credit histories and scores to remain financially stable.
