Credit checks in the UK can be processed in literally minutes – but as with all things in life, if you want to know your credit score immediately, you’ll usually have to pay for it.
There are three main credit-reporting agencies in the UK, and you can check your credit rating at any of these three reputable companies:
www.experian.co.uk
www.equifax.co.uk
www.callcredit.co.uk
By law, you have right the request a Statutory Credit Report from any of these three agencies for a flat fee of £2.
Your credit report will contain all of the public and private information that is recorded in your name, all of which is available to any lenders who carry out a credit check on your name through that credit agency.
In order to apply for your statutory report, you must provide your full name, date of birth and full address history for the last six years. Your report will be processed and posted to you within 7 working days of receipt of your request and payment.
It’s important to note that if your order your Statutory Credit Report, you will not be given any details regarding your credit score. If you wish to learn your credit score and gain an understanding of how lenders view your credit profile, you’ll need to invest a little more money.
Through Experian, you can sign up for a free 30-day trial to access your credit score, credit report and any other information you’d like to know about your credit profile. At the end of your free trial period, you’ll be enrolled in a monthly membership program that costs £6.99 per month, deducted from your Visa, Maestro or Mastercard, which can be cancelled at any time. Alternatively, you can request a single copy of your Experian Credit Score for a one-off fee of £5.95.
Equifax Credit Rating offers a similar deal, where you can gain access to your credit profile for free by signing up to a complimentary 30-day trial. If you don’t cancel your membership within that timeframe, you’ll be charged £6.99 on a monthly basis in exchange for ongoing instant access to your credit card online.
For this fee, you’ll also have access to resources and tools showing you how you can improve your credit score if need be, and you’ll also be able to use their online dispute facility, to help you correct any errors quickly and efficiently.
Or, for a one-off fee of £14.95, you’ll gain instant online access to your credit report and your credit score, along with Score Performance Indicators, which show you how you rate in each category that is used to create your overall credit score.
