You might try going to an American Express payment center and pay the cash directly. There is a fee for this. Or get a Green Dot or Walmart pay as you go card. Load it at any 24 hr Walgreens or Walmart (there are other locations too). Load the money on the card. You can then buy a paypack to pay Discover.
There is also a service called moneygram.

For her since she doesnt have check card and it has never been problem for you and make the classy thing to ask friend.
